Trailer - 'The People vs. George Lucas'

There aren't many figures in modern cinema more divisive than George Lucas, particularly after the release of the second trilogy. Some people view him as a sort of godhead while others think he peaked in 1977 with his third film and has been mostly out of ideas ever since.

But most movie fans have an opinion on Lucas, and that's the subject of the new documentary, The People vs. George Lucas. The film will combine interviews with ardent supporters and the torch and pitchfork crowd determined to drive Lucas out. Also, director Alexandre Philippe has opened up his documentary to include fan films made specifically for the occasion. Interesting concept.

There's no release date yet, but we'll keep you posted.

It's impossible to knock George Lucas. He more or less created modern cinema together with Steven Spielberg. Today, it's hard to imagine how far ahead they were. For many years ILM were the only ones who could create convincing visual effects.

Oddly, George Lucas' creativity was ruined by money, while Stephen Spielberg's was not.

I think the defining moment for George Lucas was when he realised that The Empire Strikes Back was less successful financially than Star Wars, despite being a better and more complex film.

He corrected that mistake with Return of the Jedi, Ewoks and all, and never looked back.

That's not quite true. He backtracked with Episode III, which turned out to be a final return to form.

Considering George Lucas' importance, we just have to forgive him for a lot of things.

So are you assuming that "created modern cinema" is a good thing. I like Star Wars but many of the things I like least about modern movies come directly from ILM
