Ridley Scott Changes 'Nottingham' to 'Robin Hood'
Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 5:16PM
Remember how cool it was that Ridley Scott was remaking the Robin Hood story, coming at it
from the perspective of the Sheriff of Nottingham? Well, forget all about it. Scott tells MTV, "I think we are just going to call it Robin Hood," scrapping the original title, Nottingham.

The shift isn't just a name change; Scott reveals that the big plot device - having Russell Crowe potray both Robin Hood and the the Sheriff of Nottingham - has been scrapped. "[It] was an idea so far back, way back when at the time I had this proposed to me, and I read it and thought, ‘I don’t really know what it does for it, but it’s alright’,” he remembers, but says that it serves the film better "to simply have the evolution of a character called Robin Hood, who will come out of a point in the Crusades, which is the end.”
So now, that Nottingham as the hero concept has crashed on the rocks, and Nottingham himself won't be nearly as important as we believed even yesterday. Crowe is playing Robin Hood, which I don't like on its own, and apparently he won't be Nottingham now at all.
Scott was apparently not asked about the new rumor that Cate Blanchett is his Maid Marian, but since the news broke about that a couple weeks ago, it's hardly up to date anymore. Production Weekly says she is in the cast, so until we hear differntly, we'll go with that.
This is all fairly troubling from where I sit; I wonder what makes this a different enough construction to justify the exercise.

Aww, damn it. I was really looking forward to this. And the title "Nottingham" was so much better too. I'm sad.
So he's saying it serves the film better to do something the way it has been done before, rather than in a whole new, interesting way? Hmm... odd logic there.
I'll keep watching my DVD boxed set of Bladerunner. Is the Renaissance of Ridley finally over?
Only one man capable of playing Robin Hood (other than Kevin Costner and Carey Elwes, that is...). That man, of course, is Orlando Bloom.
Hayden Christiansen could pull it off too, but I highly doubt he would accept the role, considering the success of Jumper. Can't wait for the sequel!
Taking a break from a cameo appearance in the SeaLab 2012 movie, this has been...
American Wilson
This sounded awesome at first and now it sounds awful....I don't even know how that is possible. Crowe as robin hood? Maybe like 8-10 years ago I could have saw that, but to me he fits Nottingham much better.
Of course it could be worst. Like Orlando Bloom as Robin Hood...HA HA.
