Big News About 'Little Fockers'
Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 4:27AM
The threequel in the Meet the Parents franchise is moving ahead again over at Universal, with The Hollywood Reporter dishing some details on Little Fockers. Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, and Owen Wilson would all return, and we suspect that means Teri Polo and Blythe Danner would, too.

This time around, of course, the movie is about the kids, Stiller's children/De Niro's grandchildren. Hijinx and hi profits will follow almost immediately. The franchise has made over $750 million worldwide, and there's not much guesswork involved in predicting the viability of another installment.
The film has been discussed for years, but has finally found a clear path to move ahead, even with some changes. Director Jay Roach won't be returning, and John Hamburg is writing a new draft of the script, which he also did on the previous films. The news about Roach is the biggest surprise so far, and The Reporter says some of the directors being considered are David Wain (Role Models), Peyton Reed (Yes Man), and Lars Von Trier (Dogville). OK...not Von Trier. But they are looking at the other two guys plus Chris Weitz.
Of course, you never bought a big tub of popcorn to see what Jay Roach could do with these characters and situations, so I'm not entirely sure the director is a big deal. If I were to hazard a guess as to a release date, provided the film continues to move at a brisk pace, I'd go with summer 2010. That's where the money is, and this is clearly only being made for money.

Jay Roach usually works without a script, doesn't he? That's what gave the original two Focker Flicks a "holy crap I can't believe that just happened!" feel. Not saying that there aren't other directors that can pull it off, just that tightening the reigns a notch or two could send the franchise spiraling into oblivion...
Then again, at this juncture, these are just familiar characters we "love". The whole double entendre has sort of worn itself thinner than my old tighty-whities by now, don't you think?
Big opening weekend with a quick BluRay release to follow...
What will next week's Stiller-related announcement be? Heartbreak Kid 2?
I don't believe Roach works without a script, no. The first one had an actual, honest-to-goodness screenplay, which was based on an even older script. There's no doubt it'll be big, though.
