Sunday, February 22, 2009 at 11:41AM Box Office - $40 Million for Madea
Had we not already reported on the Friday night box office, it would have
been very surprising to see Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail debut
with over $40 million. But with opening day ticket sales of over $14
million, this was certainly not a massive shock.

Yep, just when you thought the steam had gone out of Perry's career with
several lackluster offerings, he's certainly back with Madea, which will
most likely be his highest-grossing movie yet. It's also his biggest debut,
by over $10 million.
That was the big story this weekend, which Hollywood generally takes off
because so much focus is on the Academy Awards. So, Madea Goes to
Jail was the only major release. Taken will make $100 million
by this time next week, and it still hasn't dropped out of the top three since
its release a month ago.
And Slumdog Millionaire, the heavy favorite to win the Oscar
tonight, finally cracked the top five at the box office, in its 15th week in
theaters. It's now sitting at $98 million in domestic ticket sales, with
another $70 million overseas.
The Top Five:
1- Madea Goes to Jail ($41 million)
2 - Taken ($11.4 million)
3 - Coraline ($11 million)
4 - He's Just Not That Into You ($8.5 million)
5 - Slumdog Millionaire ($8 million)
