Sunday, February 22, 2009 at 6:05AM Trailer - The DVD Sequel 'S. Darko'
What's your take on S. Darko, the Donnie Darko follow-up? I'm against it, by and large, for the very practical reason that nobody involved in the original is around for the sequel. With the exception, that is, of S. Darko herself, Daveigh Chase.

You might remember Chase from the original movie as Donnie's kid sister, Samantha. Or you remember her jumping out of the goddamn TV in The Ring. She's on Big Love these days, and for this film, obviously, Samantha's the main character.
If Richard Kelly were taking the reins on this or if a meteorite didn't play a pivotal role in the story, I might be more easily convinced that this one's got merit. The direct-to-DVD release doesn't help, either.
Probably more a curiosity than anything else, you can look for S. Darko on DVD on April 28th. Actually, I guess you can look for it now if you like, but you just won't find anything until the end of April.

Wierd. I just watched Kelly's Southland Tales last night.
Truth be told, I didn't really "get" Donnie Darko until the second or third viewing. Understanding for me came when I watched through a filter: I pretended like I was an emotional pube who hated my life.
At the time, I also realized that I wasn't a young man anymore, because this would be exactly the kind of movie I would have treasured when I was 18 or 19. But life, as they say, had moved on.
It has been 8 years since D. Darko was released and I can't help but wonder if the life (and world) has moved on for the 27 15-25 year olds who connected with it back then in its theatrical release, and the millions more who found it on DVD in the years to come.
It's easy to see why the studio is going to DVD with the followup, but whether or not consumers still care enough to go back to that world, if it's still relevant, is beyond me.
As for Southland Tales? It looks like I'll need a few more viewings on that one too...
stupid. what a shame.
Idiotic. Thank god it's a straight-to-DVD movie. I thought they were releasing it in theatres. Phew.
From the story line it's more of a frakking remake of the first!
Meteor? Check.
Weird Religious people? Check.
End of the world? Check.
High School? Check.
Young Teen seing things? Check.
The point of the movie is obviously in the moolah $$$ but.. i will watch it because it has james lafferty in, and i'm curious as to whether he can actually act outside of One Tree Hill.
