Way Too Soon: 2010 Oscar Predictions
Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at 1:20PM
It didn't take long for the 2010 Oscar predictions to start. It's a silly game, of course; while you may easily have said The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was going to be nominated at this point last year...Slumdog? Don't think so.

I think we're going to see that trend of boutique studio nominees continue in the next few years, since Focus, Fox Searchlight, and The Weinstein Company gobbled up three of the five nominations for Best Picture this year. Those movies are kind of hard to predict a year early. What's going to be this year's Slumdog? We have to wait until festival season to find out, most likely.
That hasn't prevented a couple of websites from starting the campaigns early for a few films. In Contention has already pegged Amelia, Nine, Shutter Island, Taking Woodstock, and Clint Eastwood's untitled Nelson Mandela movie as the prohibitive Best Picture favorites. Amelia is an Amelia Earhart biopic with Hilary Swank and Ewan McGregor, Nine is the splashy new musical with Daniel Day-Lewis and every actress living or dead, Shutter Island is Martin Scorsese's follow-up to The Departed, and Taking Woodstock is a 1960s flick from Ang Lee. The Eastwood thing is self-explanatory, especially when you factor in stars Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon.
Can all five be nominees? I'd say Nine, Shutter Island, and the Mandela movie have good odds. Matt Damon could have three nominees, believe it or not. His Paul Greengrass movie, Green Zone, and his Stephen Soderbergh spy movie, The Informant both come out this fall. There's also Avatar, The Lovely Bones, and The Road, among others.
Most of those films, along with a dozen or so additional titles, are mentioned by both Cinema Blend and Rope of Silicon in their predictions.
But...all right, we'll play the silly game. Damn you, conjecture. Here are our 2010 Best Picture nominees:
Broken Embraces
The Informant
Eastwood's Mandela Project
Shutter Island
Nine There. Happy?

Colin: Those are cool early predictions; it will be interesting to see what happens in a year's time. Maybe Clint Eastwood will add a few more nominations to his total. I was extremely disappointed that he did not get a best actor nomination for Gran Torino. I also thought the title song would get nominated. Perhaps the Academy members thought Clint had been rewarded enough in recent years.

Oh yeah and my dark horse for best actor is: Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes
Inglorious Basterds might also end up winning best original screenplay and and a couple of more oscars.
Leo Dicaprio could also have a chance of winning an oscar for once also.
But I think the best performance in Shutter Island will be Michelle Williams.
Public Enemies is an adapted screenplay, my mistake.
Best Adapted Screenplay: Public Enemies

Best Original Screenplay: Up

There's an indie called GET LOW that was made very quietly starring Robert Duvall, Bill Murray and Sissy Spacek that I'm starting to hear some good buzz about. May be a factor come award season.
I think that the BEST ACTRESS category will be a toss up between Meryl Streep and Hillary Swank - Apparently the release date of Julie and Julia ( which stares Meryl) was prosponed because the film producers were so impressed by her performance that they thought that she could win an oscar for it so they realeased it closser to the time when award ballots are due to be posted!!!!!
let me restart that

I SAY BEST ACTOR WILL BE MORGAN FREEMAN AND BEST ACTRESS WILL BE HALLE BERRY. BEST PICTURE WILL PROBABLY BE STATE OF PLAY.
I would love to see Halle berry win another oscar but she will have some competition. Morgan freeman should be winning his second oscar. They should feel bad for not giving him more than one.
I hope Viola Davis gets a lead role. She is probably the most talented actress there is. I hate when black people get mad when shows like the ocsars do not award them but when Viola didn't win, I was very pissed. She need a lead oscar.
