Cate Blanchett Signs Up as Crowe's Maid Marian

Last month, Nottingham Robin Hood cast member Mark Strong said he believed Cate Blanchett would eventually replace Sienna Miller as Maid Marian in Ridley Scott's next movie, and it appears that he's a pretty good source.

Blanchett has signed on for the film, which would pair her with Russell Crowe. "They are both highly accomplished dramatic actors who are taken seriously playing rich characters in period pieces, but each has the ability to show you fun," said producer Brian Grazer, who has to be over the moon about the tandem.
Variety puts the budget of Robin Hood in the $130 million range, which might be a bit steep, but with Scott's penchant for period action, it certainly isn't surprising. In fact, the trade describes the new direction of the film as a Gladiator take on the Robin Hood story.
Robin Hood begins filming in April and will be in theaters in 2010.

Remember the days when studios would toss together competing productions? One of the best cases is Wyatt Earp vs Tombstone (though Armageddon vs Deep Impact comes to mind as well). In each instance the lower budget affair ended up being the more fun, profitable film.
The reason I mention this is that Robin Hood seems ripe for the pickings. It's a simple enough production to pull off, and a younger cast combined with a hip up and coming director could be enough to steal all of this lumbering elephant's thunder.
