Sam Jackson Back as Nick Fury for 'Avengers' Run

In Samuel L. Jackson's case, the squeaky wheel got the grease. The actor, who took his displeasure with Marvel's negotiating tactics public, has reportedly signed a long-term deal to remain in the role of Nick Fury for the company's Avengers arc that will run through at least 2011.

Jackson's Fury made his debut in Iron Man, albeit briefly. He is expected to have more to do with Iron Man 2, and presumably other films that tie into The Avengers, like Captain America and Thor. The next movie in the cycle is Iron Man 2, arriving in May 2010.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the still unconfirmed news, and mentioned that Nick Fury would also likely appear in Avengers sequels and a possible spin-off for S.H.I.E.L.D., the military/hero group Fury leads in the Marvel comics. It's a huge deal that could include nine movies.

Marvel has not handled its business very well since Iron Man was released last May. Director Jon Favreau had to wait much longer than necessary to be back in the fold for the sequel, Terrence Howard was replaced by Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow still doesn't know if she's in the sequel, and several villains have been announced and retracted for any number of reasons.
