You Will 'Recall' 'NeverEnding' Remakes
Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 11:31AM
On the same day, it was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter that The NeverEnding Story and Totall Recall would both be remade. The Total Recall update is from producer Neal Moritz and Columbia, while Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way - which has a jones for remakes all of a sudden - is eyeing NeverEnding.

First of all, how can a story that has no end spawn sequels? There was more than one NeverEnding Story back in the day, and I never understood that logic. Secondly, does the remake mean we'll get another bitchin' theme song from Limahl? You remember, the lead singer from Kajagoogoo?
But I digress...
I think if these two groups had called each other, we could have a classic "you got your peanut butter on my chocolate" moment. Could you imagine: NeverEnding Recall? How awesome would that be? A boy, that giant dog, a parallel universe, and Philip K. Dick-infused futuristic paranoia. I'm telling you, that is an idea plated in the finest gold from France.

Total Recall did spawn a cable TV show on Showtime. Probably wasn't any good, I never watched it and I liked Total Recall. Nevertheless, it just goes to prove the Hollywood is desperately running out of original ideas. When they run out of TV shows and comic books are we going to see movies like 'Britney & Kevin' or 'My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancé'? Maybe even 'Octo-mom Goes Wild'.
Total Recall is not ripe for a remake. It's only 18 years old and it holds up, though it is extremely violent, more so than you might remember if you haven't seen it in a while. Parents groups like to complain about movie violence, they should take a look at some of these older action flicks. I am willing to bet that a remake would be ironically less violent.
If the story is remade, they need to go with the original idea of a non-traditional action star lead. If I remember correctly, Richard Dreyfuss was originally cast in the first one. How different would that have been, both for he and Arnie.
Thanks, Colin, now I can't get that out of my head.
