Box Office - Jonas Brothers a Little Out of Harmony

Although I would certainly expect Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Experience to perform better today and tomorrow than it did yesterday even before seeing its estimated Friday haul, I don't think anybody figured it would only draw about $5 million on opening day.

The Jonas lads still took the first leg of the three-day race, but just barely. The film's $4.8 million is not really a big number, so Madea Goes to Jail finished right behind it. On Thursday, we projected - like a lot of people - that the new Jonas 3-D movie would explode for around $30 million. Our reason was simple: The Hannah Montana 3-D concert movie made that much money in half as many theaters, so even allowing for the Jonas Brothers' popularity not being as all-encompassing as Hannah's, you'd have to figure it would still make up the difference in the number of theaters.

So far, that's not the case. Again, still look for this to put up better numbers on Saturday, but $30 million this weekend seems hard to justify.

Slumdog Millionaire is enjoying the post-Oscar kiss in a big way; it's headed for at least $10 million this weekend, a second-straight top five finish, and total U.S. earnings of nearly $115 million.

The weekend's other new release, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is tanking in a big way. It might make $6 or $7 million this weekend, but that's not enough to make anybody involved terribly happy.

I believe both the soundtrack CD and movie would have sold better if they'd had better promos. I only happened to come across the CD on Amazon. Although debuting a live album at #3 is not bad! The movie has had some promotion on Disney but locally it seemed like it was only playing for the weekend, which sold out in pre-sale, but the mid-week showings were nearly empty like when we saw the movie yesterday. We may see it again, it was that much fun! I've been to hundreds of concerts and I used to play in a rock band, so I'm not a typical mom. I took my daughter and her friend to the Jonas Brothers w/ Demi Lovato concert last summer, and I was pleasantly surprised at how talented the Jonas Brothers are and how much I enjoyed the concert myself! They write most of their own songs, which speak from the heart with sincerity on one, and then jump with the joy of youth on another. Unlike many bands, the Jonas Brothers sounded great live, were entertaining to watch, and the special effects were fantastic. Having been there, we had to see the movie to relive the memory of that amazing event! This film is well done, and the 3-D aspect is fabulous (I love 3-D in general). The JB3D movie really captures the energy and excitement of the live show, as well as giving the fans some inside peeks into the 'living the dream' lives of the Jonas Brothers. As a mom, and one who remembers the dark side of the entertainment business, I am SO glad that these young men provide wholesome role models to tweens-young adults. It is remarkable how fast they soared to the top. Don't be a one-note and slam the JoBros for playing commercial pop rock. Life is meant to be enjoyed - appreciate talented entertainment, from pop to rock to country to opera. If you are (or you have in your family) a poprock music fan, or simply enjoy 3D movies, this is a must see!
