I think we'll learn a lot about the viability of the home video market tie-in thanks to Watchmen. This is really the first time that a non-franchise movie has launched a companion DVD (in this case, two) around the time of its theatrical release.

Tales of the Black Freighter, is really for fans of the original graphic novel, although there is so much talk about the film now that the DVD will get plenty of attention, as will The Complete Motion Comic, likewise released on March 24th.
There are some new images from Black Freighter, courtesy of JoBlo, and you can see some of the animation techniques they used to tell the tale of a castaway (Gerard Butler) trying to warn his family about a cursed pirate ship called the GMC Yukon. Oh, sorry, the Black Freighter. My mistake. Anyway, the story is from a comic book featured within the world of Watchmen, and giving it life on DVD is a potentially brilliant decision.

If these DVDs sell in a hurry, then I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot more of this kind of thing in the future with very select properties. Black Freighter will retail for about 20 bones, and The Complet Motion Comic will go for a little bit more.
