Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 2:51PM Rumor Patrol: Depp and Penn Won't Be 'Stooges'
I give a vote of no confidence to the rumor that
Johnny Depp and/or
Sean Penn might star in the new
Three Stooges movie directed by the Farrelly Brothers. Want me to explain myself? Gladly.

First, let's hear the rumor in full. A "source" tells In Touch (via
Just Jared) that, "They want Johnny to play
Moe and Sean Penn will be Larry — they’re still looking to cast Curly." Take that for what it's worth.
Let's dispel this nonsense right now, beginning with the money. Depp commands whatever he commands and Penn could get
millions for a project like this as well. This movie simply isn't designed for that kind of expense. Secondly, and I hate to
be blunt here, but who wants to work with the Farrelly Brothers right now? They haven't had a hit in nine years, they haven't
made a good movie in 11 years. They just don't have the stroke to go get anybody they want. Plus, let's consider the project
for a second. If you were his agent, would you let Johnny Depp get within ten miles of a script for a Three Stooges
movie directed by the Farrelly Brothers?
The funny thing is, Depp makes more sense than Sean Penn. Why a ridiculous notion that is. Sean Penn as Larry in a Three
Stooges movie. The oh-so-lighthearted Sean Penn. Uh-huh. And Curly will be played by Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Now, the movie is scheduled to open in nine months, so I don't know how any of this would ever come together even if it's the
best comedy script since There's Something About Mary, although I kind of doubt that's the case given the circumstances.
See, this rumor's not even fun.
