Amber Heard Joins Johnny Depp's 'Rum Diary'

It's been a pretty good week to be Amber Heard, and not just because she can wake up, look herself in the mirror, and see Amber Heard staring back. The bombshell has been ascending for a while, thanks perhaps to her chops in the safely locked away All the Boys Love Mandy Lane.

She's getting some grown up parts in grown up movies, now, with The Informers, which was the laughingstock of Sundance despite her nudity, and now she's been inked for John Carpenter's latest film and Johnny Depp's The Rum Diary.

I don't expect a great deal out of The Ward, Carpenter's first trip behind the camera since 2001, in which she'll play a woman haunted by ghosts at a mental institution. That's kind of old hat.

But The Rum Diary is the real deal. It's a female lead opposite one of the three or four biggest names in show business at the moment, and it's a role The Hollywood Reporter says had the likes of Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson dropping hints about their interest. Why didn't the more established names get the call? Skin could've been a factor, as the role of journalist Paul Kemp's free-spirited lover calls for beaucoups de nudity. Well done, Amber, well done.

The Rum Diary begins production in about six weeks down in Pueto Rico, and we know it will get Depp's full attention because of his close relationship with Hunter S. Thompson, who wrote the book. He's also a producer through his Infinitum Nihil production house.
