Sunday, February 8, 2009 at 2:03PM McG Jokes About Christian Bale's Tirade
The furor over Christian Bale's recorded comments last summer on the Terminator Salvation set has finally started to cool off. If you missed it, it was reported last year that Bale went nuts on director of photography Shane Hurlbut, and the tape was finally leaked this week. And yes, he went nuts, all right.

But Bale has apologized, and when asked at Comic Con in New York whether or not the issue then or now has been a distraction, Terminator director McG jokingly screamed at a fan, "What don't you f--king understand?"
Sci-Fi Wire reports that McG has downplayed the whole incident, and even put Bale on speakerphone to the assembled crowd at Comic Con after footage from the film was shown. But it certainly appears to be a dead issue now.

"It hasn't affected us at all. He talked about it yesterday; the whole thing got a little heated, but frankly the bigger violation is that anything that happens on a movie set leaks out. It's not fair, and I hope it doesn't color filmmaking in the future with actors being more cautious regarding going for it. It's part of the creative process. Christian took responsibility for how he acted. Shane and Christian are fine now...I wanted that kind of passion to show up in the John Connor character."Even though I still think four minutes is way too long for that kind of reaction to occur, McG makes a good point about the audio winding up everywhere being a greater concern. We'll see if that kind of passion showing up in the John Connor character is worth all the controversy when Terminator Salvation arrives in theaters this summer.

First off, Terminator Salvation has received way more attention from the "tirade" than any of the productions who shelled out cash for Super Bowl spots, and, correct me if I'm mistaken, but T-4 was one of the few Summer movies w/o a spot...
So, advantage Bale, McG, and T-4, because they have received more notice this week than even Jack Box getting hit by a friggin' bus.
That said, Bale seems to be getting a bit of a free pass here. Not sure why, but the fact is that we are all looking forward to his future as Batman and John Connor.
Will we all still flock to see Salvation? You-betcha. And they didn't even have to spend four million dollars to get us to do it.
Michale Bay's Shia Lebeouf DUI thing doesn't even compare...
bale's the man all i have to say is these things tend to happen on a movie set especially with very focused actors like bale it just we don't see or hear about these things all the time which makes it somewhat surprising nonetheless he's a great actor and i cant wait for the movie to come out
I think that sound clip was hilarious, but the whole thing just gave away a bunch of free promotion for the movie. I just wish Bale was using his British accent the whole tirade, because that would of been way better.
Clever observation, Will.
It certainly raised the temperature for T4.
I still doubt that Salvation will hold water in terms of box office receipts but we'll find out soon enough. As far as Bale's tirade goes it's been well overblown but there really doesn't appear to be a big backlash akin to what Tom Cruise received after his spat with Today show host Lauer. Then again Cruise seemed to be much more under the microscope for his behavior (hopping on Oprah's couch) in general and of course his association with Scientology.
Whether the negative press Cruise received helped keep people away from War of the Worlds or the fact that the film was crap is debatable. I'd heard enough of Cruise mouthing off to avoid it but that's just me. As for Bale, he's still enjoying the success ride that is The Dark Knight so I can see where he might be given a pass. Should he get into many more publicly exposed tantrums however it could become a detriment.
You're quite right, Asana.
If Bale carries on with erratic behaviour he could become a new Tom Cruise, especially if one of his films should flop.
If this turns out to be just a bad patch during last summer, people will forgive him.
