Sunday, March 1, 2009 at 3:55PM Tragedy! Keira's 'King Lear' Cancelled
The new British production of Shakespeare's King Lear had everything. Everything except money.

The big screen Bard adaptation was set to star Anthony Hopkins, Gwyneth Paltrow, Keira Knightley, and Naomi Watts, but Ruby Films has had to pull up stakes on the $35 million project, although a spokesperson for for the company would not say if the decision was related to the troubled economy, offering only, "Ruby are no longer doing it - the film will no longer go ahead."
There have been plenty of versions of King Lear in the past, and it's one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies. But it has never had a film production with such a big budget and as big a parade of talent involved. Strangely enough, there's another version of Lear still moving forward, although how Al Pacino as the title character is a better option than the one that was just scrapped is hard to figure.
Perhaps another company can step in and get this production back on solid ground, but usually when the money dries up, everyone is in a hurry to find a film to take its place, so even if it eventually does get made, there will probably be some collateral damage in the cast.
