'Heathers': The Musical

When I was a useless teenager, Winona Ryder was the girl for me. And that meant watching Heathers perhaps more often than I should have. A movie with more social importance than quality, really, it is nonetheless one of those essential movies of the 1980s, along with stuff like The Breakfast Club and Back to the Future that didn't just come out in the 80s, but fed back into the mystique of its time.

And now it's becoming a musical.

I can't say it's really surprising, given the success of film adaptations on Broadway. But The Hollywood Reporter says that the new Heathers is closer to hitting the stage than you'd think.

Race to Witch Mountain director Andy Fickman has been putting the musical together for some time with Kevin Murphy, with whom Fickman worked on his Reefer Madness musical update. And there were script readings this week in Los Angeles, featuring Kristen Bell, Chrisian Campbell, Corri English from Brokedown Cadillac, Christine Lakin, and Jenna Leigh Green.

No, that doesn't automatically mean that Veronica Mars will play another Veronica on Broadway. There are no production dates yet, so putting together a cast - especially one including a Kristen Bell - is tough to do at this point. The plan is to start regionally next year with an eye on New York thereafter.

Obviously, if the musical's a hit, the next step is to make a movie remake of that remake, which would obviously feature cameos from the original cast.
