'Star Trek' Trailer Sets Download Record

Last Friday, lucky movie fans got to see the new trailer for Star Trek tacked on to the front of Watchmen. Of course, plenty of people saw it without buying a movie ticket. And according to Apple, more people downloaded the new hotness by J.J. Abrams on Apple.com than any other trailer...ever!

Paramount Pictures says that the trailer was downloaded 1.8 million times in 24 hours, and another three million and change right-clicked it in the next four days. So, in all, five million in the first five days. That's a pretty good haul, especially considering all the places not named iTunes where you could watch it (including here, repeated below for your convenience).

I'm surprised that it outpaced last week's other monster trailer, Terminator Salvation, which is both a slightly better video overall and is at least as big an event, I'd think. But it certainly wouldn't surprise me if Captain Kirk et al were one of the bigger hits of the summer.
