Sam Raimi in "Earliest Stages" of 'Spider-Man 4'

Sam Raimi hit SXSW this weekend with his new film, Drag Me to Hell, and it received the praise you might expect a horror film by a great director with a history in the genre to receive at an event like that. His new horror flick comes out at the end of May. But the real news is that Raimi's talking Spider-Man 4, giving status updates on where the film is and where Sony wants it to be.

After the embarrassment of the third movie - made all the more shameful by the fact that it followed two very good superhero movies in the series - I didn't want Raimi to come back. I thought it might be time to give the franchise a new jolt of life. Unfortunately (at least for my theory), that isn't the way it has worked out. Raimi is back and so is Tobey Maguire. And from the sound of it, Raimi is feeling his way through the process this time around.

"Right now, I'm working with the production team. I'm in the earliest stages of working with the writer, trying to work out a story," he said. "We're closing in on Spider-Man's adversary or adversaries...but I think Sony is going to want to release the Spider-Man announcements themselves."

Now, anyone who suffered through Spidey 3 knows that multiple villains really hurt the film. It's just a bad idea in general because it splits the story arc up so much and divides time from one central story. So I hope they come to their senses and do no more than two villains, and only one major adversary.

Raimi also talked about Kirsten Dunst, who we all thought was confirmed for part four. Apparently not. "I'm hoping that Kirsten will be in it, but we're still talking about that," the director explained. "Definitely, she's got to be in it. It wouldn't be the Spider-Man series without her."

Really? I think we can get along just fine without her. Keep Mary Jane if you want (although my preference at this stage is Gwen Stacy), but Dunst is a real drag these days. I'm not alone in feeling that way, am I?

One thing we know for sure about Spider-Man 4 is the release date. Marvel announced last week that it's coming out May 6, 2011.
