New 'Thor' Rumors Include Hartnett, Portman

Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood Daily is hearing rumblings about the cast for Thor. To begin with, there's more anectdotal evidence supporting the claim that the lead role might go to Stellan Skarsgard's son, Alexander. But there are new names in the running.

One of them is Josh Hartnett, who we think would make a better Green Lantern, and Charlie Hunnam, Liam Hemsworth, Joel Kinnaman, and Tom Hiddleston are also considered to be fall-back options. I know - those aren't big names and Thor definitely needs some star power to help sell the movie.

Well, Natalie Portman would help secure the fanboy vote, don't you think? It's just a rumor, but either Marvel or director Kenneth Branagh or Portman or some combination of the three are weighing her as a female lead.

I can't help but have scary visions of Princess Amidala, a stretch of films where it appeared Portman forgot how to act or was simply so disenchanted by the process of working on a big effects films that she shut down and took huge chunks of the second Star Wars trilogy with her. We know it wasn't the former, so it could be the latter.

It could also be that George Lucas can't direct actors and has only really done it once (American Graffiti). On the other hand, Branagh can direct actors, so if she's interested that could a good pickup. Not exactly a cure-all for opening weekend box office, but it's a start.

Again, it's just a rumor, so who knows? As Kirsten Dunst proves over and over, you don't need to be anything special to fill a lot of the girlfriend roles in a Marvel movie, so Portman may be much more than the role demands.
