It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but the new comedy Sunshine Cleaning introduces us to characters we're glad we met. Perhaps because they feel so familiar to us, we don't need much of an introduction. But it's to the film's credit that we don't come away from this with the impression that it's a retread, even if, in a lot of ways, it is.
Movies that work outside of the huge Hollywood system aren't bound by the same rules, so their stories and their characters can be radically different from what we see in 3,000 theaters every weekend. Sunshine Cleaning provides an interesting backdrop for its familiar character, and the set pieces more than the dialogue is what keeps this moving steadily, assuredly along.
Sisters Rose and Norah (Amy Adams and Emily Blunt) are trudging through their lives. Rose was a cheerleader in high school, but after she got pregnant, Albuquerque offered little advancement. It's not that Rose wants to be a maid, but with a child needing the assistance of a private school, she can't stop earning money to start over. Norah hasn't advanced much, either, because she's a bit of a drop-out by nature.

This is a completely charming movie that is engaging from start to finish. It is about two sisters left with a mess after their mother committed suicide when they were very young--so young that the younger sister, Norah, can barely remember her. This understated background event is revealed very slowly in a series of flashbacks. The older sister Rose, on top of the world when she was a high school cheerleader dating the school quarterback is scrambling to support her illegitimate son as a cleaning houses with the babysitting help of her dysfunctional sister and her dreamer father, and doing it cheerfully. It's a family that loves each other and tolerates shortcomings. When Rose's son continues the family tradition of getting in trouble, she yanks him out of school and needs to find a way to earn enough money to put him in a private school. The quarterback father, now married to a woman pregnant with their second child, has apparentlly taken no responsibility for the son but has managed to continue a torrid affair with Rose. Rather than offer to pitch in a little money to help with his son's problems, he suggests that Rose might earn more money cleaning up after crime scenes. She tries to do just that. Her good intentions are accompanied by absolutely no idea of how to accomplish the jobs once she gets them. A one-armed cleaning supplies store owner befriends her, and as she gets more proficient at the job, she values the job--and herself--for cleaning up after the messes that follow suicides and murders and "making things right." Rose, Norah, their father, and even her son grow during the movie. Seeing it is spending time well.
