"As a kid, I just connected to it. I wanted to hear it over and over," says director Spike Jonze of Maurice Sendak's classic children's book, Where the Wild Things Are. "It's like trying to explain why you love somebody. To me, the Wild Things are both cuddly and dangerous. I wanted to climb atop of them like Max."

Jonze has figuratively climbed atop of them, since he is directing this October's film version of Sendak's book. USA Today writes that Jonze has known Sendak for almost 15 years, and that it was the author who approached Spike about making a movie out of Where the Wild Things Are. And, Jonze is quick to point out, Sendak also instructed him to use his own imagination to expand on the original text.
"He was adamant that I make my own thing. He had strong opinions, but he would ultimately defer to us. He said, 'Make something personal to you.'
"I never thought of it as a children's movie. My intention was to be true to how it felt to be 9 years old. Maurice's whole thing is to be honest. You can say anything to kids as long as you are respectful and not pandering."
The nation's newspaper also has some brand new images from the film, so huzzah!

I hope he bypasses this universe into that of the book.
Different strokes I suppose.
