Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 2:24PM Two Contrasting 'Angels & Demons' Posters
We have two brand new posters for Angels & Demons, one a bright and shiny American one-sheet and the
other a more somber looking Asian poster that showcases Robert Langdon's furrowed brow. And why shouldn't he be
worried: The Illuminati is picking off potential pontiffs.

Though I'm sure someone has done the research on this, I'd be fascinated to read about the logic behind having
different marketing tools for other parts of the world, and how they impact product performance. Certainly,
audiences in certain regions react differently to one poster than to another. For example, showing Tom
Hanks running through Vatican Square has much more impact on a Western audience than it would where Catholicism
isn't as big a part of the cultural fabric.
The next logical step is to ask why a movie about Catholicism would be expected to do much business in those same
regions where the poster with that imagery doesn't make as much sense. In the Asian poster, they're clearly selling
Tom Hanks - a movie star - and some
mysterious gargoyles, and in the American one-sheet, Hanks is a smaller part of the puzzle, cloaked by anonymous religious figures. Interesting counterpoints.

All the marketing they had to do was fix Tom Hanks's hair.
