2010 Academy Awards Pushed Back to March
Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 3:12PM
Next year's Academy Awards will be pushed back to March 7th, delaying the anticipation for
movies most Americans will never see by a full two weeks. Maybe you're thinking, as I did, "Wasn't everyone
reasonably happy with this year's Oscars? Numbers went up a touch, right?"

Yes, but you haven't taken into account that other major event people have stopped watching over the years: The
Winter Olympics. This isn't unprecedented; for the 2006 Oscars, the awards were moved into March to avoid the
winter games.
The Academy Awards used to always be held in late March, but in 2004, it was decided to move them up to February,
which makes a lot of sense because it only rewards films released before December 25th of the prior year. So if
you're three months out, it becomes more difficult to both keep the momentum going commercially, and it also puts
your awards almost outside of their window of influence, since most of the other awards are distributed in January.
The scheduling for the Oscars will be amended slightly; nominations will be announced on February 2nd, and there will be an extra week allotted in the nomination process, giving voters a few extra days to screen more movies.

Actually, I'd rather watch Bode Miller fuck up for the second time in 5 years than watch the academy awards. But that's just me...
