Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 11:48PM Michael Bay Wins Award for Making Movies That Don't Win Awards
I don't know where you'd send your congratulations, but Michael Bay will receive the 2009
Vanguard Award for Excellence in Filmmaking at ShoWest in Las Vegas next week. Yes, that's the actual name of the
award, and yes, they mean to give it to Michael Bay.

Now, in artistic circles, "vanguard" technically means being ahead of the curve or ahead of your time, so perhaps
that's not the best description of Mr. Bay and his work, especially because his next film is Transformers 2, a sequel based on TV
show created solely to merchandise toys, and as a producer he has graverobbed horror movies from the 70s and 80s.
Must be that groundbreaking work on Armageddon.
Truly, this rewards Bay's ability to print cash. ShoWest is, after all, a party for the exhibitors and theater
owners. They have to love the guy.
In a statement announcing the award, ShoWest's Mitch Neuhauser cribbed hyperbole from a Peter Travers review. "We
are thrilled to be able to honor one of the most bold and imaginative filmmakers in the industry today." Effused
Neuhauser, "Michael Bay's aggressive visual style and memorable action sequences leaves audiences at the edge of
the seats and running back to the theaters for more with each new release."
It's the second Vanguard award handed out at ShoWest; last year, Sarah Jessica Parker was the inaugural recipient.
