Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 10:18AM Danny Boyle Says No to James Bond
It's the sort of thing that happens to every Academy Award-winning
director. Danny Boyle, a week after his Slumdog Millionaire won eight Oscars, including
Best Picture and Best Director, has zoomed to the top of everyone's wish list. And yesterday,
The Sun reported that Boyle could be in line to direct the next 007 movie.

“Everyone on the EON team thinks Danny would be a fantastic addition to the Bond family,” a
source told the British tabloid. “(W)ith Daniel Craig’s involvement and the way the films are
now structured — with the emphasis on the characters and plot rather than gags and gadgets — it
is right up Danny’s street."
Artistically, I guess that would be a cool marriage, and if anything, Boyle has always shown a
willingness (or maybe a need) to branch out into areas he's never explored before. A big budget
Bond movie would certainly qualify, and as he told me during our Slumdog interview,
"Godard said all you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun, which is true. But you need a
bag of money, as well, ideally." And those are the basic ingredients of any good Bond movie.
Consider also what we reported over the weekend, that Boyle really didn't have a next project
lined up, and had no idea what movie he'd be involved with next.
But alas, Boyle and Bond probably won't happen. A spokesperson for the director told WENN
today, "While Danny says he always has and always will enjoy the Bond movies he has no plans to
direct one. Danny is naturally flattered to be thought of!"
Good move for Boyle? I really don't know. Certainly, he wouldn't have as much control over it
as he would another of his films, and there's always that thing in the back of a director's
mind about directing the 23rd movie in a series. Then again, look at Casino Royale.
