Another 'Up' Clip That Doesn't Rise

Because they aren't in direct competition, it's tough to say that Monsters vs. Aliens and Up have anything to do with each other, but DreamWorks has been improving its animated films lately, and MvA and Kung Fu Panda are a pretty entertaining one-two punch. They're also very successful, and in fact, DreamWorks has made more profitable movies than Pixar over the past five years.

Up is Pixar's next movie, of course, and by the time it arrives on May 29th, Monsters vs. Aliens will have run its course. But will it set a bar to high for Up to reach? Tough to say. While it's not as ambitious as recent Pixar movies, it also seems to have broader appeal. In a way, it's kind of like Pixar's DreamWorks movie.

But for my money, it just doesn't look very entertaining. It's another fish out of water story - a familiar setup for Pixar - but if the animation isn't that great and the jokes don't appear to be working, then what's the draw? Here's a new clip from Up that starts with some immediate promise but gets boring in a hurry.

It sure doesn't feel like Ratatouille to me.
