Cronenberg Wants an 'Eastern Promises' Sequel

I consider this to be great news: David Cronenberg is working on a sequel to Eastern Promises. The 2007 Oscar-nominated film was one of the best-received Cronenberg movies ever, and though I wouldn't immediately think sequel here, the director sounds genuinely excited about it.

Indicating that Viggo Mortensen would be back, Cronenberg told MTV, “We are going to have a meeting very soon between me, Steve Knight and Paul Webster to discuss what the script would be."

"I have some very strong ideas about what I would like to see, but I would like to hear what they have to say as well. And then after that, if all goes well, Steve goes away and writes a great script. If we all like it, we make it.”

Perhaps you're thinking that a sequel seems really out of character for Cronenberg. You're right:

“It’s the first time I’ve ever been in a situation where I actually want to do a sequel to something. I’ve never had the desire to do that before. But in this case, I thought we had unfinished business with those characters. I didn’t feel that we had finished with Nikolai and we had done a lot of research that was more than we could stuff into that one movie.”

As long as there are no more naked knife fights, I'm in.

I loved the naked knife fight, I'm tired of the collective American fear of the penis. Like all this hoopla over the Dr's blue dong just strikes me as juvenile.

In any case, this is a great idea and I hope it gets past the wishful thinking stage.

Am I the only one on the planet to think that this movie is a mediocre Cronenberg? Not that I insist on only sci fi splatter movies like 'Videodrome' and 'Existence', it must be obvious by now that Cronenberg moved on and worked on a new style.

I just thought that of his newer movies 'A history of violence' and 'Spider' were way, way better. I did not even rip 'Eastern Promises' after watching it.

The only highlight for me was the scene with all these old mafiosi read the guys tattoos. for the rest I thought it would look good on TV, not something I would go to a cinema for.
