Thursday, March 5, 2009 at 10:53AM Fearless Forecast - Everybody Watches 'Watchmen'
Watchmen will have the biggest opening weekend since
Twilight, but it's not the opening weekend we should be worried about. Obviously, you don't make a movie of
this size just to appease fans of the graphic novel. And the graphic novel is not an easy nut to crack. So filming
that and trying to to get people who want mindless action to see it will be a bit of a test in the second and
third weekends.

But it'll do really well over the next three days, beginning tonight at midnight, when well over a thousand
screenings are scheduled nationwide. And it doesn't hurt that Warner Bros. gets this weekend all to itself. No
other wide releases are scheduled, and even last week's two flicks - which we're combining to call Street
Fighter: The Legend of the Jonas Brothers - were major, major disappointments.
But what's the ceiling for a movie like Watchmen? Well, the R rating won't help, but there's no way the
movie as presented could be PG-13. But let's be realistic: This isn't a $100 million opening weekend. That doesn't
happen just because you market the hell out of a movie. James Bond can't even get that kind of debut, and he's
been at this a while.
The Top Five:
1 - Watchmen - $61 million
2 - Slumdog Millionaire - $10.5 million
3 - Madea Goes to Jail - $10 million
4 - Taken - $7 million
5 - Jonas Brothers - $5.25 million
