'The Hobbit' to Become a Trilogy?

Even some Tolkien fans think a two-movie arrangement for The Hobbit is one too many, and now there's word that Guillermo Del Toro and Peter Jackson are interested in stretching out the story to three films. Can the story hold out that long?

Assuming it's not an April Fool's joke, The One Ring cites a source close to the production that indicates a Hobbit trilogy is being negotiated instead of the two-film arc, and that the stories might involve backstories for either Gandalf, Saruman, or both. The One Ring also mentions that the the third film would hypothetically allow those Lord of the Rings cameos that have been whispered about for the past few months.

According to the report, the negotiations are primarily financial in nature, specifically, how much it will cost to keep Jackson and Del Toro for a few more months.

Do we want another Tolkien trilogy? It's hard to really know until we see the first movie and get a sense of how it progresses. There's a school of thought that if Tolkien wrote it (and it can be pried away from the estate), then you might as well let Jackson film it and tell the complete story. What's potentially troubling is finding a way to tie some unconnected pieces together.

One thing that is not potentially troubling: The box office possibilities.

Keep in mind this isn't a studio confirmation, nor have we heard anything from the loquacious Mr. Del Toro about this prospect, but whether or not the information is solid, the idea certainly seems like it might have some merit.

I guess they can just somehow combine The Hobbit with The Silmarillion. Maybe they could even throw in the Adventures of Tom Bombadil. Not that it matters really though, whatever they end up making, I'll have to go see it. Then I'll have to buy the regular DVD releases and then months later the fancy boxed DVD's.

Ugh...three films now? It just sounds tedious...

I can't decide if I like this idea or not...

Not gonna see it. I'm just gonna wait for your review! That's how I keep up with all the movies these days. I just don't have time to see them all. Especially the part three of a trilogy, they always stink.
