Box Office - A Big Weekend for 'Hannah Montana'

Although Miley Cyrus says she wants to move on to other things, it's going to be difficult for her to find another project that rings the cash registers quite like Hannah Montana. Just look what happened to Hilary Duff after Lizzie Maguire.

The new Hannah movie zoomed to the top of the box office charts, beating most predictions with $34 million. It's the second $30 million debut for Hannah, who scored impressively with a 3-D concert film last year. Half of the business came on opening day, which isn't out of the norm, losing an average of 39% each day after that.

The slide on Saturday and Sunday probably means a one-and-done scenario here, because it shows that there was early heat and then it cooled down. In fact, the movie was only number one on Friday, falling behind Fast & Furious the rest of the weekend.

The Vin Diesel-Paul Walker sequel was competitive despite losing 60% of its opening weekend crowd, and with more movies on the way aimed at young men - Crank, Fighting, Wolverine, and everything else in May - this was probably the last major cash grab for Fast & Furious. But nobody at Universal is complaining about a movie that has already made $118 million.

The news is not as encouraging for Observe and Report, which didn't just open in fourth place because it was released in fewer theaters, it also couldn't muster $5,000 per screen, a pretty standard number for an opening weekend. The $11 million debut isn't the end of the world; the film doesn't have a huge budget to overcome, but it also doesn't push Seth Rogen on the A-list, since Pineapple Express faded as soon as it was released and Zack & Miri failed to light it up.

And Dragonball? Well, what did you expect? About $4 million? Yeah, that's about right. The good news overall is that April 2009 will completely hammer April 2008. Last year, only about $360 million was spent on the top 12 flicks at the box office all month, and we're already to $280 million in two weeks this year.

The Top Five:
1 - Hannah Montana ($34 million)
2 - Fast & Furious ($28.7 million)
3 - Monsters vs. Aliens ($22.6 million)
4 - Observe and Report ($11.1 million)
5 - Knowing ($6.7 million)

I hate to split hairs with you (truly) but Seth Rogan is becoming quite a star. Maybe not A-list yet, but what you said about Pineapple Express fading as soon as it was released is inaccurate. It's opening only accounted for something like 25% of it's gross, which in this day, isn't all that bad. Also, the movie only cost $27 million, so the total domestic haul of $87 millions makes it quite proftiable. Also, let us not forget that he is a major voice in Monsters V Aliens that is raking in quite a bit as we speak. Couple that Kung Fu Panda, Horton Hears a Who, Superbad, Knocked Up, etc., and he's having quite a run. Yes Zack and Miri didn't do all that well, but what Kevin Smith movie does? In fact, according to Boxofficemojo.com, Zack and Miri is Mr. Smith's top grossing movie ever. Not bad...Again, I hate to quibble, I truly do enjoy your commentary!

You can't count animated films in that mix. Sorry. If you could, Craig T. Nelson would be a big star, and Albert Brooks would get all the work he could handle.

The fact is, away from Judd Apatow (and those magic words, "from the director of The 40-Year-Old Virgin), Rogen's last two films have opened much softer than they were expected to. Zack & Miri should've been a $50 - $60 million movie, and they were certainly marketing it like it was. But it was DOA, and the same is true for Observe and Report, which managed about 70% of its projected crowd and as I mentioned above didn't even generate $5,000 per screen. That means that even in the locations where it was playing, there weren't many sold out shows.

Actually, 25% of the gross on opening day would be pretty bad. Maybe you mean opening weekend? But Pineapple Express made $12 million on the Wednesday it was released and never again made over $8 million. Not on Friday or Saturday. The curiosity was instant and it didn't lead to word-of-mouth business.

And who's splitting hairs? You raised Seth Rogen's hand in a token of victory for leading Kevin Smith to his biggest movie ever, when in fact, it only outgrossed Jay and Silent Bob by a million dollars.

The point about him being an A-list star is this: You can't put him in anything and have it be a hit, the way Jim Carrey was a decade ago or the way Will Smith was for an entire decade. Without Apatow, his movies don't generate that much interest.

I'm curious to see what Green Hornet does because that one, unlike Zack and Miri and Observe and Report is a big studio movie.

You are right, I meant opening weekend. I'm in no way saying that he is an A-lister, especially given your point about voice-over work. In fact, I think he's on the verge of over exposure.

The marketing in Observe and Report was dissapointing. They didn't seem to quelch all the "Another mall cop movie?" noise, and I'm assuming the bad Cinemascore rating was due to the fact that the audience was expecting something else. Slap stick perhaps?

I'm also interested in seeing what Green Hornet brings. Could be big, but if it flops it could be devistating given all that he is putting into it.

Anyway, thanks for the response. I knew you would set me straight! I look forward to hearing you on The Mike O'Meara show soon.

I don't know what to say just I don't know what you really meant with: just look what happend to Hilary Duff after Lizzie McGuire; if you mean that Hilary Duff is not that famous now you're wrong maybe it has changed for kids but for rest of the people her's popularity has increased because she has acted in more good movies and has released more CDs and I understand that for you Miley Cyrus is more famous 'cause you must be someone that's watching Disney all time that's why you don't know how popular is Hilary Duff right now and also Hilary's popularity about Lizzie McGuire stills 'cause you can say: hey, she is that one of Lizzie McGuire the best program Disney has ever had! because Hannah Montana hasn't beaten yet Lizzie McGuire, Lizzi McGuire still being the program that was seen the most so don't question Hilary Duff's popularity; o but if you meant something else I apologyze.

Duff hasn't acted in more good movies; her movies are among the worst received in Hollywood. And they don't make money anymore.

In fact, of movies in which she's the lead actress, Cinderella Story made $50 million back in 2004. Since then, her combined box office for four movies is $39 million. That's a terrible average, and in fact, is less than The Lizzie Maguire movie all by itself.

I don't know when you found that information;but it's totally wrong!!! After Lizzie McGuire Movie she made A Cinderella Story that got in total loke 95 million; then Raise Your Voice that got like 29 million; then Perfect Man with 35 million; then Cheaper by Dozen 2 that got 110 million; then Metrail Girls with 27 million and in 2008 War Inc that got like 10 million up to now. Also Lizzie McGuire Movie got like 57 million not less and this year she will release 4 movies more. So, you don't know anything about Hilary Duff's movies and they weren't bad didn't happen anything worng to Hilary Duff after Lizzi McGuire as was said before. If you're not absolutely sure about something just don't say anything; you better shut up.
