Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 5:22AM 'Star Trek' Now Opening May 7th at 7pm
In the past 24 hours, there has been some manuevering on the Star Trek front. The second event picture of the summer has been
locked in for May 8th ever since the movie was pushed into the summer from a December 2008 slot about a year ago. But with a
few weeks to go, that date has changed.

It's nothing drastic, like a Lil' Kim plastic surgery session or anything. But instead of May 8th - and presumably midnight
shows on that Friday - Star Trek will now debut in the 7pm slot on Thursday the 7th. Why not go ahead and release it at noon or 3pm? I think the answer is in the marketing.
Paramount absolutely needs Star Trek to be an out-of-the-park shot, because the studio only has three tentpole movies
this summer. I believe G.I. Joe will get a hefty advertising push because it can rule August, but August isn't June,
when Transformers is released, and it sure as hell isn't May. Joe will probably be a big hit, but I don't know
that the studio looks at it in the same way it does Transformers and the new Trek franchise.
Transformers will very likely win the summer box office derby, but Star Trek is the studio's only substantial
release between May 1st and July 1st. So, in order for Trek to be competitive in one of the most competitive months
we've ever seen, it has to hit the ground running. And you know what would help? Packed theaters on a Thursday night. Sure,
midnight would be fine, especially for Trekkies, but 7pm ensures big crowds because it's a more convenient time for more people, giving the film an extra opening day in essence and probably landing the film in the late local newscasts in every major city in America, giving the impression that it's a must-see film.
The numbers will be stronger at 7pm than they would be at midnight on Friday, and by the time Friday night rolls around, the
word-of-mouth will be really strong.
