Upset Buyers Get "Rental" Copy of 'Slumdog' DVD

A few weeks ago, Fox announced that it would remove special features from its rental versions of new DVDs. One would suppose that's a profit margin move - save the good stuff for people willing to shell out $20 - $30 to buy the whole thing. Kind of a chincy move, but it makes a certain amount of sense. After all, if you rent two or three movies in one weekend, most people won't dig through the bonus material on the second disc.

But it didn't take long for the new plan to backfire. Thousands of people who bought the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire instead received the rental version, meaning they got none of the special features they paid for. Oops.

Amazon was so besieged with complaints that it posted the following message online:

"We are aware that special features were missing from a number of Slumdog Millionaire DVDs. Fox has set up a hotline telephone number (1-888-223-4FOX) for those consumers who may have purchased a version that does not contain special features. Upon calling the hotline, these consumers will be able to have their disc replaced for one containing special features. Fox regrets any inconvenience this has caused."

So it's just a hiccup, but an embarrassing first step in Fox's new home video direction.
