Another 'Angels & Demons' Boycott, and Another Robert Langdon Movie on the Way

At the same time Indian Catholics are calling for a boycott of Angels & Demons, the third film in the series has been announced. Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol will be published in September, and the film rights have already been locked up by Columbia, which as Variety points out, gives the studio two of the biggest franchises around, with the Dan Brown books and Spider-Man.

Tom Hanks set a record with his salary for Angels & Demons, and if it's as successful as Da Vinci Code, there's no reason to think he'll make less the next time.

As for the boycott, it's as thoughtful as one of those can be, I suppose. The Catholic Bishops Conference of India wants to ban the film there because, "Christianity is not understood by the majority of people in India yet, and many non-Christians may mistake the content as the truth." The group made a similar move with Da Vinci, but relented when a disclaimer was attached to the film announcing it as a work of fiction.

Bans and boycotts are nothing to get steamed over; everybody walks the other way from something, although maybe not as publicly. I boycott Jay Leno because it's not funny, and it never shocks me or dismays me when religious groups or special interest groups cry foul when a work of pop culture comes along that runs counter to their beliefs.

The only way it becomes unacceptable is when the film is completely restricted from release, which is not going to happen in India; the bishops just don't want members of their flock watching it.

Do you have any idea what Hanks is making for this movie? I'm assuming there's some sort of base salary with some back-end stuff, but I'm not getting any real numbers from internet chatter.
