You don't see a lot of sports movies about the business of sport, but
that's going to be the case with Moneyball, an
adaptation of the book by baseball player-turned-executive Billy Beane. Beane is famous for
consistently fielding a competitive Oakland A's team despite having one of the ten smallest
payrolls in baseball.

The film already stars Brad Pitt as Beane and will be
directed by Steven Soderbergh, and now the
trades tell us comedian Demetri Martin has signed on to play Paul de
Podesta, who number-crunched his way into baseball lore by devising the Earned Run Value system
employed by Beane to find hidden gems he could sign for low salaries.
Martin will be seen this summer in Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock, so showcasing his skills
with two of the last ten Best Director winners on back-to-back projects is a good segue into
film.
Moneyball will appropriately enough shoot in the summer, and will also feature big
league players like David Justice and Daryl Strawberry appearing as themselves.
