Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 8:51PM First Look at Mel Gibson in 'Edge of Darkness'
Mel Gibson hasn't worked in front of the camera in a long time. Once among the biggest box office draws in the
world, he's been working as a director and producer over the past few years, and then there's the other stuff.
Gibson's DUI and tirade cooled whatever heat his career had found after the success of The Passion of the
Christ, which was controversial on its own. And now Gibson's getting divorced, and we've learned he's filthy
rich, like a billionaire or something. So you can forgive him not wanting to act; he's been photographed plenty of
times over the last five years.

But he returns to acting this fall in
Edge of Darkness, playing a cop investigating his daughter's murder...and then State of Play breaks
out. "He's a seasoned old detective, a bit hangdog" Gibson told
Empire, which has published the first official photo from the film.
"He's in a state of shock for most of the film, because he's had tremendous trauma right at the beginning of it,"
explains Mel.
Edge of Darkness is a product of Casino Royale director
Martin Campbell, who also directed the original BBC miniseries back in the 1980s.
