Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 3:47PM Retro 'Harry Potter' Book Cover Redesign
Fan made art is probably bigger than ever, with Photoshopped posters popping up that look
better than their studio counterparts, and even trailers being passed off as the real thing. And if you have an
idea, you can create some pretty cool stuff just thanks to software. Granted, it helps if you know what you're
doing.

That's where Washington-based designer M.C. Corley comes in. On his blog, Corley recently unveiled a complete
series of new Harry Potter books designed "to look like classic Penguin Books." I think it's remarkably
well-done, and if you didn't know any better, you'd think they were the real thing.
Corley has also designed similar covers for Lemony Snicket, Spiderwick Chronicles, and His Dark
Materials, the books on which The Golden Compass was based.
Click on any of the covers to blow 'em up real good like:
Incidentally, Corley's work is so good that he was asked by Warner Bros. not to sell the Potter covers
commercially. That's a high compliment.

These are fantastic covers whose design reminds me of some Dashiell Hammett books I have which were published in the 1960s. I wonder, had the Harry Potter books been initially published with covers like these, if the public would have reacted as strongly as they did––and have––for the series, both positively and negatively. These carry such a darker tone that the stories actually had, and even indicate a sophistication of contents that may or may not have been present between the covers––that is a debatable topic. The point is to note how important cover design is to the release and subsequent success of a book. Again, would Harry Potter do as well had they been published with these covers? Would the audience be wider than it is now (though, save for the few detractors, Harry Potter's influence rests comfortably in ubiquity)?
Of course, what these further reminds me of are the "adult editions" of the Harry Potter books they produce in Britain for, shockingly, adults who are too embarrassed to read the standard, brightly colored Harry Potter books in public, a list of which can be seen here. Would the States be ready for those types of re-releases? I don't know. I do know that I would proudly display the full series of Harry Potter on my shelf if they looked like this.
I love Harry potter!.
