Sunday, April 26, 2009 at 8:58PM Cronenberg's 'Videodrome' Being Remade
The remakes just keep on coming. Universal will give a fresh new look to Videodrome, the cult classic by David Cronenberg about a TV executive who began programming torture murder to boost ratings. Cronenberg presently has no role in the production, but he has a higher profile in the mainstream than he has since The Fly, so it wouldn't surprise me if the studio inquires.

Variety says Universal is giving the remake over to Ehren Kruger, who wrote the American version of The Ring and is part of the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen squad.
How will this one be different? "The new picture will modernize the concept, infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller." So I guess that translates into being tamer.
Down on remakes as a lot of film fans are, I guess this is a workable idea. Sci-fi makes for fertile ground for updates because the science is always changing. Of course, I am surprised it's not Scanners. Oh wait, they're supposed to be remaking that, too.

This is the only reason why I like Disturbia, at least try to sell it as its own thing.
