It's Gotten So Bad They're Remaking 'Drop Dead Fred'

I like Russell Brand as much as the next guy, although since he's a rather divisive character, that may not be saying much. Anyway, the point is, I think he's overdoing the remakes. First, he's resurrecting Dudley Moore's Arthur, although I think that's actually great casting if you need to remake Arthur. But now, The Hollywood Reporter says that Brand, who rose to fame in America in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, will headline the remake of Drop Dead Fred. Even if he wasn't in line for Arthur, this would be a horrible decision. Why? Because Drop Dead Fred is a miserable motion picture not worth revisiting. The original became better known for being a flop than anything else, and I guess somewhere over the past 20 years it transformed into a good idea again. How that happened, I have no idea. Brand will play the childhood imaginary friend of a woman who loses her man and her job in one day and they're reunited when she moves back home to pick up the pieces. The remake will apparently embrace imaginary friends in a more universal way, which may or may not be a coincidence, since Universal is producing the new one. I'm not hearing any compelling reason to go back to Drop Dead Fred, and in fact, the only good that has come out of any of this is that it made me think of Phoebe Cates for a few minutes. That always takes the edge off.

You cant remake drop dead fred. it's just not possible.
No one could do fred better than rik mayall. This is pathetic.
They will probably americanise it to the max, and have elizabeth as some sort of paris hilton wannabe. Gross gross gross.
The movie isnt even that old.

I love drop dead fred, how can you say it's a miserable motion picture?! The Wizard of Oz didn't do great at the box office either but that doesn't mean that it was rubbish; many people now think its a wonderful film and timeless classic. I din't even know DDF was a box office flop and have never heard anyone say it's a bad film, so if that is your logic then I think you are wrong. That being said I do agree that it shouldn't be re-made, but only because the original was so good that a remake is disrespectful to a classic that needs no improving or updating.
