Bale Back for Batman, Even if Nolan's Not

Christian Bale wants to show up critics of the Christopher Nolan Batman movies who claim that threequels are doomed to fail. He tells Total Film, "I would like it if people say, 'You'll never make a good third movie.' I say, 'OK, let's make a third movie in that case, let's prove them wrong. But that's just me."

There's little chance that won't happen. The Dark Knight is one of four movies to ever earn a billion dollars worldwide, and Christopher Nolan will look at Gotham City after next summer's Inception. But Bale says even if Nolan doesn't return, he'll play Batman. Because he doesn't have a choice.

"The fact is, I have to! I've signed up! Chris doesn't. So I'm in a bit of a fix if he says he doesn't want to!"

Bale's got a big summer, with Terminator Salvation and Public Enemies due out six weeks apart. But the real relationship he has with audiences is as Bruce Wayne and the Caped Crusader. Warner Bros. has said for months and months that the third Batman movie is completely Nolan's baby. If the studio doesn't meddle and force the director into villains he doesn't want (and actors he doesn't want playing them), then there's every reason to believe the movie will be very good and very successful.

But it's interesting to hear Bale even talk about a scenario that doesn't include Nolan.
