I was kind of amazed when I looked at the history of the Star Trek
franchise recently. To begin with, maybe half of the ten films are any good, certainly no more
than six of them qualify as movies most people would watch again.

The box office has been pretty strong, even though only one of the movies in the series has
made $100 million or more. It's been a $750 million film franchise, with the biggest hit yet to
come.
This summer's Star Trek is a reboot, of course, with a whole new cast, something that
was probably overdue years ago. And it should make at least $150 million if not $200 - $225
million in the U.S. The one thing standing against it is that it really only has about ten days
to make its case. There will be a lot of carryover audience between this film and
Wolverine, which opens the week before, and Terminator Salvation, which opens two
weeks later. So if any movie in May will feel the squeeze of competition, this is it.
And we learned today from Cinema Blend that Star Trek will only be the third film in the series to earn a PG-13 rating. I don't think it's surprising that it went for the 13, but I guess I would've thought most of the others would have fallen into that category, too, especially because until now, the franchise skewed so much older than 13, anyway.
Here's the latest TV spot for Trek, featuring a little new footage at the beginning.
