Monday, April 6, 2009 at 10:59AM The Cannes Film Festival of 'Doctor Parnassus'?
Tucked away in a story about the lineup for this year's Cannes Film Festival, The Hollywood Reporter mentioned that The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus could be one of three Colin Farrell films to premiere on the Riviera this May. The great thing about all film festivals is that good and bad word of mouth can reverberate for months, so if Parnassus does well there, its fortunes could finally turn around.

Even though it contains Heath Ledger's last performance and his previous work in The Dark Knight sold, oh, one or two tickets, distributors have been slow to respond to Parnassus, the latest Terry Gilliam film that also stars Farrell, Jude Law, and Johnny Depp in the unfinished Ledger role. There is no confirmation that Parnassus will debut there, just that it's a likely candidate, along with Farrell's Ondine and Triage.
There are also indications that some real heavy hitters could use Cannes as a springboard for their most recent projects, directors like Coppola, Jane Campion, Ken Loach, Almodovar, Lars Von Trier, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and Alejandro Amenabar. Tarantino also confirmed last week that Inglourious Basterds will debut at the famed French festival.
As far as Parnassus goes, Terry Gilliam has been in post production for nearly a year, and one of the film's producers said as recently as last month that one studio executives see the film, it won't seem like a tough sell for audiences. And given the spotlight sure to shine down on it if it premieres at Cannes, Parnassus would definitely attract distributors if the response is good. As always, I'm just curious to see what kind of madness Gilliam bottles for his next film, though I'm extra curious to see this one because of the multiple stars playing one role.
I certainly couldn't imagine a scenario where this film is left out of Cannes if the director wants it in the field, just because of the many storylines involved.
