Download a Free 'Star Trek' Phaser App from iTunes

Set your iPhone to Stun - here's a brand new free application from the iTunes store tied into the upcoming Star Trek. You can turn your iPhone or iPod touch into a Star Trek Phaser, complete with sound effects from the new film. "A full screen 3D view ensures accuracy and power, and helps take your skills to the next level in Gaming mode," promises Apple. You can play in one player mode and post your best score to a worldwide leader board, or play with two players in a WiFi mode. In addition to the game, the Phaser app comes with a bunch of videos, and as luck would have it, they're from Star Trek, as well. Not bad for a freebie. It's a pretty cool gimmick, all and all, and it's a definite step up from last year's iPhone movie tie-in, the Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor Maria Bello On-Screen Discomfort Calculator. Oh, it was definitely accurate, but just not very much fun.

I am very excited about the new film, but downloading a nerdy "phaser" app to your iPhone is about as uncool as downloading an American Idol performance (exclusively!) from iTunes.
