Kal Penn Goes to Work for Obama

It doesn't look like we'll be getting a Harold & Kumar 3 for a while: Kal Penn has quit acting. But it's not for the Joaquin Phoenix reasons or even the Viggo Mortensen reasons. Penn is taking a job in the White House.

He tells Entertainment Weekly (by way of the detective work of Anne Thompson) that he got to know President Obama and some of his staff members during the campaign and expressed an interest in working for the administration. So that means he's leaving House at the end of this season and won't be appearing on screen in the foreseeable future.

"I'm going to be the associate director in the White House office of public liaison. They do outreach with the American public and with different organizations. They're basically the front door of the White House. They take out all of the red tape that falls between the general public and the White House. It's similar to what I was doing on the campaign."

Penn says he's been intrigued by public service since he was a kid, and this is certainly an admirable way to go about it, giving up a ton of money, but leaving himself enough of a window to return to show business by getting out while he's still a young guy who could have a future in front of the camera in four or eight years if he chooses to come back.

In the meantime, kudos to Kal Penn.

Definitely--kudos to Kal Penn!

He was really great in the underrated film The Namesake from 2007!

I wish him the best serving our country!

how is going to be a pr flunkie for obama "serving our country"? you people have such a twisted sense of patriotism. you know there are actually people DYING for our country, right? but i bet you make fun of them while you promote this guy. eh, whatever. "when it's my guy in office, it's patriotic to be patriotic, but when it's the other guy, it's patriotic to call him names!" typical liberal b.s.

wow Anon is a little jaded. Just cause "serving your country" generally means enlisting in the military, it does not mean it is the only way to serve your country and the article and comments in no way say anything about serving in the military as not being patriotic. It simply points out that giving up a very nice salary and a promising career to work for your country is a patriotic thing to do.

Anon, how dare you say I do not respect the troops, I know that they fight and die so that we may have our freedom. I get choked up ever time I think about the sacrifice they have made for us. I will blame our last president for the mess he got us in over in Iraq, but I will never blame the troops that had no choice but to go over there and fight a war they shouldn't have to. And I spit on you for even thinking that I do.

What kind of moron would hire an actor with no history of public service or even a read job?

What kind of moron you ask? Prolly the same moron that doesnt have the experience to be president himself...the same moron that had the nerve to comment on Palin's experience to be VP which even then was greater than his! Keep praising this POS Obama while he puts us 100 million in debt each day on interest alone with this "stimulus" package. GG Obama prosecute the Bush admin for interrogating Al Qaeda leaders to get information on planned attacks and saving A LOT of Californians lives. Obama is a joke and when will you all wake up and realize this, when it's too late?
What he's trying to do to the Bush admin for the interrogation process should be considered by every definition of the word TREASON and he should be treated as such!
