Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 4:56PM America's First Wind-Powered Drive-in Theater
For a lot of people, the drive-in theater is a thing of the past. Many people under the age of
30 have never even been to one, since conditions in the industry favored multi-plexes beginning in the 1980s. But
they're still around; I drive by one probably three or four times a week.

But in Gibson City, Illinois, the drive-in theater is a 21st century development. The Harvest Moon Holiday Twin -
the only drive-in for miles and miles around - is the first wind-powered movie theater. Currently, owner Mike
Harroun says the new small wind turbines don't power everything, although that's the ultimate goal. However, as
Clean Technica's Timothy B. Hurst reports, Harroun still believes his energy costs will be shaved by about 30% this
year.
We're seeing more and more wind-powered solutions pop up, and in fact, the two turbines Harroun uses to power the
Harvest Moon helped power the Obama inauguration on the National Mall. But this is the first time someone has used
the solution to run a movie theater, which could help Harroun drop ticket prices, concession prices, and more.
"I don't know why no one else has thought of this before," he quipped.

For anyone who has never been to the Scottsdale 6, go. You are missing out.
Also, Amazing Jonathan, the Vegas showman has a "fake" drive-in theater that is in doors. Also very cool.
