Friday, May 1, 2009 at 1:25AM Check Out the New 'District 9' Trailer
You don't always see a great reveal shot in a movie trailer. You're lucky if you do, actually. But how often do you see two great reveals in a trailer? Back-to-back, no less?

I've tried to resist the temptation to compare District 9 to Cloverfield, because I think they're different kettles of fish, but I will say that just as nobody knew what the hell Cloverfield was until Paramount debuted one of the greatest trailers of all time (and followed it up with the blueprint for viral marketing), District 9 was a bit of an unknown to this point. But watch the trailer, and if you're a sci-fi fan, you're going to be really excited.
The film is produced by Peter Jackson and written and directed by his protégé, Neil Blomkamp. That tandem was going to/is going to make Halo, and for a long time, people thought this movie was just a cover for that. Nope. Completely different. And incredibly cool. Incidentally, you can check out this trailer in theaters today, attached to the beginning of Wolverine.
This comes out on August 14th, and hells yeah.

This - well, the concept and look anyway - actually looks a lot like a short Blommkamp made some years ago, before the Halo-hype: Alive in Joburg (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1185812222812358837)
I remember stumbling across it when I first heard about Blommkamp. From the short little things I've seen of him thus far (like the little bits of Halo, the above Joburg and a sports Ad), I think I like his style. He seems to try and ground his over-the-top sci-fi in a very contemporary en realistic looking setting. I don't know, it just looks and feels different, but in a good way :-)
