Make Friends with the 'Watchmen' Blu-ray on Facebook
Monday, May 11, 2009 at 12:37AM
Even though Watchmen was a bit of a head-scratcher
for moviegoers unfamiliar with the graphic novel, I think Warner Bros. deserves a ton of credit for
letting Zack Snyder make the movie the way he did and for the way it was aggressively and creatively
marketed. That trend will continue for the DVD and Blu-ray release.

Warner Bros. has announced the first coordinated Facebook friend networks officially affiliated with a
home video release, which will afford fans the opportunity to watch what The Hollywood Reporter calls "interactive community-screening features" of the Watchmen director's cut.
It's an extension of existing BD-Live technology, which allows the same kind of thing, but now it can be
hooked into your Facebook friends network.
The catch? You've got to buy the Blu-ray copy of the film to unlock the goodies. That actually really
blows, because what's the point of making something you already own tie into something you already get for
free? But I guess if you're really into your Facebook page and really into Watchmen, this is an
interesting option. You'd think - or at least I would - that you'd want to give some features away
completely gratis on the maiden voyage, you know, to use the free Facebook stuff to encourage
people to buy the Blu-ray.
Two other updates on the Big Blue Wang front: We still don't have a release date, although it's expected
to show up in late July. Whenever that happens, the film will also come out on satellite TV, Xbos 360,
Playstation 3, and On Demand.
Also: Don't even waste your cash on the standard format DVD, because there are no bonus features for a
film that produced close to a half-dozen hours or more of special programming. This is the way of the
future, though. You're going to buy a Blu-ray player whether you want to or not, or you just won't get
anything but the movie and some trailers on your DVD.

Nope, nope, Hell no.
I'm not touching this one.
Wake me up when they release the "Ultimate Director's Cut" with "Black Freighter" and all the new scenes spliced in.
