It's kind of like Verizon rolling out a new rotary phone: Disney will release the animated Princess and the Frog this December, marking the first time in a few years that the studio has given us a hand-drawn film. The last Disney flick to use traditional animation was Home on the Range, and don't we all hope this is better?

The Princess and the Frog will be the 45th Disney feature that is completely hand-drawn, a list that began with Snow White and includes seven of the top 70 grossing films ever (adjusted for ticket price inflation). But even though the films were extremely successful, you can't knock Disney for commiting more fully to digital animation, for virtually every reason under the sun.
However, there could be room for both, provided the films that employ traditional animation have that classic Disney storytelling better suited for that style. So a fairytale like The Princess and the Frog is a perfect fit, and here's the first poster for the film, released by Cinematical:

You can see The Princess and the Frog in theaters on December 11th. If the gamble pays off for Disney, I'm sure we'll see a few more films that fit the mold in the next several years.
