Monday, May 11, 2009 at 11:04PM 'Valentine's Day': The Last Rom-Com You'll Ever Need
This story should come with a hyperglycemicia warning. Remember He's Just Not That
Into You? Imagine that romantic comedy on steroids. Or, more accurately, excessive amounts of
estrogen.
Garry Marshall's new movie will be called Valentine's
Day, and if it's not opening on Friday, February 12th, then someone should be fired. It's compared to
Love, Actually by The Hollywood Reporter, and that's a
pretty good target, though I'm skeptical.
Here's your cast: Julia Roberts, junior Julia (Anne
Hathaway), both Jessicas (your Biel and
your Alba), Jennifer Garner, Shirley
MacLaine, the Kutch, and Bradley
Cooper...who was in He's Just Not That Into You. Roberts is on
leave from Iraq who's seated next to the boyfriend of a closeted athlete (Cooper), and Kutcher plays a
flower shop owner (uh-huh) about to marry Alba but realizes he's in love with Garner. Meanwhile, MacLaine
plays Roberts' mother...and I'm tired of setting this up.
Valentine's Day is exactly what's wrong with movies. It's built from the marketing out. I can
almost guarantee the majority of the cast will show up on Oprah the day before this is released,
and again, that opening date is way too predictable. And the script, well, don't get me started: Gay
football player, handsome guy owning a flower shop, it's all so irresistible, isn't it? It's every damn cliché I've ever seen in a romantic comedy piled on top of other clichés. It's the Dirty Dozen of chick flicks.
Bleh.

Garry Marshall is EASILY one of the top 6-10 worst directors working today (and shouldn't be- of course); why isn't he more widely regarded as the hack he obviously is? Also, what ever happened to his sister Penny, who was a much better director than he (seriously!)?
why did you not mention the fact that PATRCIK DEMPSEY AND ERIC DANE aka Mc Dreamy and Mc steamy are in this film ???
