The 19th century drama Unbound Captives will roll into production for director Madeleine Stowe later this year with Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz, and Robert Pattinson lined up for the starring roles. Yes, that's the same Madeleine Stowe from The Last of the Mohicans.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Stowe co-wrote the script with her husband, actor Brian Benben, close to 20 years ago but turned down a multi-million-dollar deal at the time because she would have only received a screenwriting credit.
Weisz will play the role Stowe originally wrote with herself in mind, a frontier woman whose two children are kidnapped and whose son is murdered. Pattinson will play her son, although I don't know if that means he's among the kidnapped kids. Jackman is on board to play the saves-the-day type.
It will be Stowe's first time as a director, and it has to be gratifying that the project has come back around. At one time, Fox upped a $3 million deal to $5 million and reportedly had Ridley Scott attached to direct, but Stowe turned down that pile of money because it just didn't feel right.
"There are moments in life where you need to follow your heart," she tells Variety. "The script remained my singular focus, but directing it myself wasn't something I ever dreamed of."
What happens now? Producers will look for potential distributors at Cannes, and the film will go into production at the end of the year.
