Johnny Depp in New 'Public Enemies' Commercials

We don't root for the bad guy as much as we used to, at least not in real life. Bernie Madoff, Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, Somali pirates - we don't spend a lot of time pulling for these guys. But things were a little different in the day of the gangster. John Dillinger may have been Public Enemy #1, but he was also seen as a Robin Hood figure in the 1930s and even today, groups of admirers still celebrate John Dillinger Day on the day he was kiiled, July 22nd. So in Public Enemies, Johnny Depp has to create an unapologetic bank robber and a rock star. Maybe for someone else that would be a challenge, but with Depp, the rock star is kind of automatic at this point, isn't it? That's part of the reason this is such good casting. Here are two new TV ads for Michael Mann's Public Enemies, which feature more Depp and less Christian Bale:
